I’m Violeta Barcenas, a self-taught Nicaraguan mixed media artist and illustrator. My work is all about energy, joy, and connection because art should make you feel something. And that something should be joy. 

I find inspiration everywhere, but I keep returning to my favorite beach town, San Juan del Sur, the colorful backgrounds of Latin America, and one of my first loves: Mexico City.

I believe in art that sparks joy, challenges perspectives, and belongs to everyone. 

After living in over ten countries, I’ve settled (at least for now!) in Maryland with my husband and Gatita Flo, who reminds us daily that joy isn’t just about having art on your walls; it’s also about a cat stealing your heart, one biscuit at a time.
