Violeta Barcenas

Violeta Barcenas/Violet Red is a self-taught Nicaraguan mixed-media artist based in Maryland. Her work is rooted in color, memory, and the feeling of being shaped by the places we come from. Through layered paintings filled with botanical forms, pattern, texture, and movement, she explores the idea that everything eventually returns--to memory, to the body, to the earth, and back again.

Influenced by Latin American landscapes, domestic spaces, gardens, and everyday beauty, her paintings move between joy and reflection. She is interested in repetition, growth, and the quiet ways nature mirrors emotional life: seasons changing, things fading and blooming again, greenery returning after winter, what we carry, and what finds its way back to us over time.

Her recent body of work, Everything Returns, continues this exploration through immersive mixed-media compositions that feel both intimate and alive.

Windows

" I think of these works as windows--small portals where green enters as memory and presence, insisting that we are not just observers of the landscape but belong in it.

These paintings act as portals, windows into imagined, layered environments where the. natural world returns as memory. Through vibrant color, pattern, and intuitive mark-making, I construct spaces that feel both familiar and invented, places shaped by fragments of longing, cultural memory, and the lived experience of place.

Each window opens onto a world that is lush, resilient, and alive. Gentle yet persistent in its reminder that we are not passing through: we belong here. "
